Cardboard Self, 2009

The cardboard self-portrait was initially created to become a teaching aid to be used in school and college workshops to inspire students and demonstrate what is possible with cardboard. However, over time and after many school workshops, it unexpectedly developed into a piece of artwork that sold through Saatchi online. The work was built onto a large cardboard skull, which was also used to show how templates, designs and drawings could be used to build complicated and sophisticated portraits from simple materials. The sculpture is mounted onto an old wooden school stool to demonstrate that strong artwork can exist beyond the formal qualities of the white plinth.
